Deputy Minister Accused of Interfering in Police Probe on Assault of UNP CMC Member
In a dramatic turn of events, United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Talatha Athukorala has accused a Deputy Minister of attempting to interfere in the ongoing police investigation into the assault on Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) member Sandamali Uluwitage.
Addressing a press briefing, Athukorala stated, “We are aware that this Deputy Minister contacted the Grandpass Police Station regarding the incident. It raises serious questions as to why a government official is showing such unusual interest in a criminal investigation.”
She further alleged that the government is undermining democratic principles and normalizing political interference in law enforcement. “It appears that democracy has been set aside under this administration. There is growing evidence of direct interference in investigations,” Athukorala said.
In a parallel accusation, Athukorala blamed the National People’s Power (NPP) party for allegedly intimidating and coercing six CMC members who had initially pledged support to the opposition, resulting in their sudden withdrawal of support.
Sandamali Uluwitage, the victim of the alleged assault, gave a chilling account of her experience. She claimed she was nearly strangled by her assailants, who warned her with the words: “Be aware that we, the NPP, have secured the CMC. Watch your step.”
Uluwitage also leveled accusations against the police, suggesting that key evidence in the case is being manipulated or mishandled, possibly under political pressure.
The UNP is now demanding a transparent and impartial investigation into both the assault and the alleged political interference. With rising tensions within the Colombo Municipal Council and mounting allegations against the NPP and government officials, calls for accountability are growing louder across political circles.
