UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk Calls on Sri Lanka to Repeal PTA, Embrace Reforms
Wrapping up his visit to Sri Lanka, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk made a strong appeal to the Sri Lankan government, urging the immediate repeal of the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the Cybersecurity and Online Media Acts.
At a press conference held on June 26, Türk emphasized the urgent need to release detainees held for extended periods under the PTA, stating that prolonged detentions without trial are a clear violation of international human rights norms.
He further expressed optimism that Sri Lanka would soon pass the bill to decriminalize same-sex relationships, aligning the country’s laws with global standards on equality and personal freedoms.
“The resumption of investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks is a positive move,” Türk said, highlighting the need for security and police reforms to prevent future incidents and build public trust.
His visit marks a critical moment in Sri Lanka’s human rights discourse, as international pressure mounts for the government to deliver long-promised legislative and institutional reforms.
