A shocking asset declaration linked to Minister K.D. Lalkantha is igniting controversy, raising serious questions about transparency, political integrity, and the gap between public claims and private wealth.
A document believed to be the 2025 asset declaration of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha has triggered intense debate across social media, especially in light of his repeated claims of living under financial hardship.
The document, which was made public by veteran journalist Uvindu Kurukulasuriya through his social media platform, has led to widespread allegations that there is a clear contradiction between the minister’s earlier public statements and the scale of assets now being revealed.
Issued under the name Kuragamage Don Lal Kantha, the declaration was certified on December 26, 2025, and signed by Deputy Minister of Public Security and Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala. According to the details outlined in the declaration, the minister is linked to a significant portfolio of assets.
These include buildings and immovable properties valued at approximately Rs. 670 million, along with gold sovereigns and jewellery estimated at around Rs. 46 million.
The declaration also lists a car worth Rs. 45 million, which is said to have been purchased using funds provided by a friend, a detail that has drawn particular public attention.
In addition, the document highlights investments in 10 companies registered on the stock exchange, as well as approximately Rs. 9 million held in bank accounts.

Uvindu Kurukulasuriya further notes that the minister’s controversial three-storey residence located in the Weliwita area of Kaduwela, which previously attracted public scrutiny, has not been included in this asset declaration.
This omission has intensified speculation, especially since the minister had earlier stated publicly that he possessed no significant assets, a claim that now appears inconsistent with the contents of the document.
Critics have pointed to the contrast between his statements and the figures disclosed, highlighting the narrative that he lives on his wife’s income, struggles to pay his daughter’s tuition fees, and survives with support such as rice and coconuts provided by party colleagues.
The situation has raised broader concerns about political accountability and transparency, with growing calls for closer examination of the declaration.
The note accompanying the revelation also stresses that the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption should take serious notice of these findings and determine whether further investigation is warranted.
