Harshana Suriyapperuma dual citizen claim is rejected by Nalinda Jayatissa, who says critics can go to court if doubts remain.
Harshana Suriyapperuma dual citizen claims have been rejected by Government Media Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, who said he was making the statement with responsibility.
Minister Jayatissa made the remarks today while responding to a question raised by a journalist at the Cabinet media briefing.
He emphasized that Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Harshana Suriyapperuma, is not a dual citizen.
The Minister said Suriyapperuma was not a dual citizen during his tenure as a Member of Parliament or Deputy Minister.
He also stated that Suriyapperuma is not a dual citizen in his current position as Secretary to the Ministry of Finance.
Jayatissa said that if anyone has a problematic situation or suspicion regarding the matter, they can approach the court.
“He has never acted as a dual citizen at any time he held these positions. If you really have a doubt about that, you can go to court against him. I say with great responsibility that he is not a dual citizen at any time he has held these positions,” the Minister further stated.
However, questions remain after journalists pointed out that information has been reported claiming Harshana Suriyapperuma has held dual citizenship in Australia since 2010.
What happens next could be critical if the matter moves from political questioning to legal scrutiny.
