BASL warns of judicial interference after the President’s May Day remarks, saying judicial independence is vital to democracy.
BASL has raised serious concern over alleged judicial interference after a statement made by the President at a May Day rally.
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka said the independence of the judiciary is the foundation of democracy and must be protected to uphold the rule of law.
In a special statement, the Association expressed strong concern over remarks reportedly made by the President regarding a court decision scheduled to be delivered on May 25.
According to the BASL, the President had commented that once the verdict is delivered, the people would be able to applaud it.
The Bar Association said the nature of this statement suggests possible interference in the judicial process.
It warned that such remarks could undermine public trust in the judiciary and weaken confidence in the independence of courts.
The Association recalled that under Article 111(C)(1) of the Constitution, no officer exercising judicial power shall be subject to the orders or interference of any other person.
It further stated that such interference is an offense under Article 111(C)(2) of the Constitution.
The BASL said it will stand firm against any threat to the independence of the judiciary, whether from the executive or any other party.
The statement, signed by Association President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Nalin de Silva, said all necessary steps will be taken to protect the integrity and independence of the judiciary.
What happens next could be critical, as the BASL’s warning places renewed focus on constitutional safeguards, separation of powers, and public confidence in Sri Lanka’s justice system.
