Former NIE Director I.G.S. Prematilaka sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court over 2024 Grade 5 scholarship exam order.
Former Director of the National Institute of Education, I.G.S. Prematilaka, has been found guilty of contempt of court for failing to implement an order issued by the Supreme Court regarding the 2024 Grade 5 scholarship examination, resulting in a severe sentence.
The Supreme Court, having determined that the respondent, Prematilaka, committed contempt of court, sentenced him to six years of rigorous imprisonment.
In addition to the prison sentence, he was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 3 million (three million rupees), and the judgment states that if he fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional one year of imprisonment.
The main charge against him was that he committed contempt of court by willfully disregarding an order previously issued by the court regarding the Grade 5 scholarship examination.
This landmark judgment was delivered by a three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Priyantha Padman Surasena.
