Tilvin Silva apologizes to the Coal Commission through an affidavit after remarks on its probe into alleged coal transaction fraud.
Tilvin Silva has submitted an affidavit expressing regret to the Presidential Commission investigating coal transactions, following controversial remarks he made about its findings.
The General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna had recently claimed that members of his government would be found correct by the Presidential Special Investigation Commission appointed to investigate the alleged coal fraud, while members of the opposition would be found guilty.
The Commission summoned Silva over the statement he made at a May Day rally regarding the functioning of the Commission.
Accordingly, reports state that Silva appeared before the Commission and submitted an affidavit expressing regret over his remarks.
The development has drawn attention because the Commission is currently examining complaints linked to coal transactions, an issue that has already generated political debate and public scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Commission investigating coal transactions stated that the period for accepting complaints ended on the 22nd of last month.
During the complaint submission period, the Commission received 28 complaints related to the matter.
The process of reviewing and considering those complaints commenced last week.
The Commission is now expected to begin public hearings into the coal transactions from the first week of July.
Silva’s affidavit comes as the inquiry moves toward its next stage, with public hearings likely to place the coal transaction allegations under sharper national focus.
