Colombia take Group K control with Uzbekistan victory after a strong second-half response helped them secure a 3-1 win in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K opener.
The result was important not only because Colombia collected three points, but also because Portugal had earlier been held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo. That made Colombia’s opening win even more valuable in the early shape of the group.
Uzbekistan came into the match as World Cup debutants, carrying the hopes of a nation appearing on football’s biggest stage for the first time. Colombia, meanwhile, arrived with greater tournament experience and the attacking quality needed to make an early statement.
The first half was competitive, with Uzbekistan showing discipline and organisation. They worked hard without the ball, stayed compact and tried to limit Colombia’s space in dangerous areas.
Colombia had more quality in possession, but they were made to work for every opening. Luis Díaz was lively on the left side and looked like Colombia’s most dangerous player whenever he received the ball in attacking positions.
The breakthrough came late in the first half when Daniel Muñoz finished from a Luis Díaz assist to give Colombia a 1-0 lead. The goal rewarded Colombia’s pressure and gave them control heading into the break.
Uzbekistan, however, refused to let the occasion overwhelm them. Instead of fading after conceding, they came out stronger in the second half and began to show more belief going forward.
Their historic moment arrived when Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored Uzbekistan’s first-ever World Cup goal. The equaliser made it 1-1 and gave the debutants a huge emotional lift.
For a short period, the match became tense. Colombia suddenly had to respond, while Uzbekistan sensed that they might be able to take something memorable from the game.
Colombia’s answer came quickly. Luis Díaz restored their lead with a decisive finish, turning the match back in Colombia’s favour and underlining his importance to the team.
Díaz’s performance was the difference between the two sides. His movement, confidence and direct attacking play gave Colombia the cutting edge they needed in a difficult match.
Uzbekistan continued to fight and pushed for another equaliser, but Colombia managed the final stages with more experience. Their composure was rewarded again in stoppage time when Jaminton Campaz added a third goal to seal the result.
For Colombia, this was a strong opening statement. They were tested by a spirited Uzbekistan side but found the quality to respond when the match became uncomfortable.
For Uzbekistan, the defeat will be disappointing, but their performance offered encouragement. Scoring their first World Cup goal and competing for long periods against Colombia showed that they can still have a meaningful role in Group K.
Colombia take Group K control with Uzbekistan victory, and with Portugal dropping points in their opener, the result gives the South Americans an early advantage in the qualification race.
Their next challenge will be to build on this performance and prove that this opening win was not just about experience, but a sign of a team ready to go deeper in the tournament.
