The Teldeniya death suspect and his wife were arrested in Jaffna as police uncovered several alleged fraud cases pending before multiple courts.
The Teldeniya death suspect was arrested after the body of a 33-year-old woman from Weligama was found inside a motor vehicle near Teldeniya Hospital on 2026.06.17. Teldeniya Police began investigations, but as the incident fell within the Nuwara Eliya Police Division, the inquiry was taken over by Nuwara Eliya Police.
In the early hours of 2026.06.24, officers from the Valana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force arrested the deceased woman’s boyfriend and his wife in the Jaffna area.
The male suspect, aged 43, and the female suspect, aged 35, are residents of the Pallekale area.
Investigations have also uncovered information about previous alleged financial fraud cases involving the male suspect before courts in Gampaha, Aluthkade, Tissamaharama, Kaduwela and Horana. Police listed the cases as follows:
A case is pending before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court over alleged fraud of Rs. 11,873,000, described as eighteen lakh seventy-three thousand rupees, involving a promise of marriage, along with the illegal use of and fraud involving a motor vehicle.
Another case is pending before the Aluthkade No. 05 Magistrate’s Court over alleged fraud of Rs. 1,721,000, described as seventeen lakh twenty-one thousand rupees, through a promise of marriage.
A separate case before the same Aluthkade No. 05 Magistrate’s Court concerns alleged fraud of Rs. 1,376,000, described as thirteen lakh seventy-six thousand rupees, also involving a promise of marriage.
A case is pending before the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court over alleged fraud of Rs. 2,200,000, described as twenty-two lakh rupees, involving promises to import vehicles from foreign countries.
Four cases filed against the suspect by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are pending before the Aluthkade, Horana and Kaduwela Magistrate’s Courts.
A further case before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court concerns alleged fraud of Rs. 4,200,000, described as forty-two lakh rupees, involving a promise to send abroad.
The two suspects arrested in connection with the woman’s death are due to be handed over to the Nuwara Eliya Police Station for further investigations.
