Vinícius Júnior scores twice as Brazil defeat Scotland 3-0, win World Cup Group C and reach the knockouts on Neymar’s long-awaited international return.
Vinícius Júnior scored twice as Brazil defeated Scotland 3-0 in Miami, winning Group C and advancing to the World Cup round of 32 while leaving the Scots dependent on other results.
Brazil entered the final group match level with Morocco on four points but ahead on goal difference. Scotland had three points after beating Haiti and losing narrowly to Morocco, meaning a draw could have strengthened their position among the best third-placed teams and a victory would have guaranteed progression.
Carlo Ancelotti made one enforced attacking change, bringing Rayan into the side for the injured Raphinha. Scotland altered four positions as Steve Clarke attempted to combine defensive resilience with enough ambition to trouble a Brazil team that had not yet secured qualification.
The plan was damaged after only seven minutes. A defensive mistake allowed Vinícius to collect possession in a dangerous area, and the forward punished Scotland with a composed finish. The early goal gave Brazil control of the match and forced Clarke’s side to chase the ball for long periods.
Scotland struggled to move possession through Brazil’s midfield, where Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães protected the defence and allowed Lucas Paquetá to operate further forward. Lawrence Shankland was isolated, while Andy Robertson and the Scottish wide players were prevented from building sustained attacks.
Vinícius struck again in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. The Real Madrid attacker found space in the area and directed a header beyond Angus Gunn, giving Brazil a commanding advantage and moving within one goal of the tournament’s first hat-trick by a Brazilian since Pelé in 1958.
Matheus Cunha ended any remaining uncertainty on the hour mark. Brazil worked the ball through Scotland’s retreating defence and the Manchester United forward completed the move for his third goal of the tournament, confirming the five-time champions as Group C winners.
Ancelotti then introduced Neymar in the 76th minute, marking the forward’s first Brazil appearance in 981 days after a prolonged battle with injuries. The returning national-team record scorer received a loud welcome, although the night’s attacking authority belonged to Vinícius, whose pace and finishing had already decided the contest.
Scotland continued competing but were unable to create the sustained pressure required for a comeback. Their strongest tournament performance remained the opening win over Haiti, and the scale of the defeat in Miami damaged a goal difference that could determine whether they advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Brazil completed the group unbeaten on seven points and finished above Morocco on goal difference. They face the runner-up from Group F in Houston on June 29. Scotland ended third with three points and no next fixture confirmed, leaving Clarke’s players to wait for the remaining groups before learning whether their World Cup campaign will continue.
The scorers, Neymar’s return, Group C standings and knockout consequences were verified through FIFA and Reuters reporting.
