Mexico complete a perfect Group A campaign as Chávez, Quiñones and Fidalgo seal a 3-0 win over Czechia and earn a home World Cup knockout match.
Mexico completed a perfect World Cup group campaign for the first time after second-half goals from Mateo Chávez, Julián Quiñones and Álvaro Fidalgo produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Czechia at the Mexico City Stadium.
The co-hosts had already secured first place in Group A after beating South Africa 2-0 and South Korea 1-0. Czechia entered the final fixture with one point and needed a victory, together with a favourable result in Monterrey, to preserve any realistic hope of reaching the round of 32.
Javier Aguirre made four changes to his starting side, including a World Cup start for 17-year-old Gilberto Mora. Raúl Rangel remained in goal initially, while Guillermo Ochoa began on the bench. Czech coach Miroslav Koubek left Patrik Schick out of his starting eleven despite the need for goals.
The first half was far more restrained than the final score suggested. Mexico controlled possession but found Czechia’s defensive shape difficult to penetrate, while Denis Višinský sent one of the visitors’ better opportunities narrowly wide before the first hydration break.
Mora offered composure and invention between the lines, but Czechia blocked several Mexican attempts around the penalty area. The teams reached halftime goalless, with the home crowd waiting for the faster combinations and greater attacking aggression that had characterised Mexico’s earlier victories.
The breakthrough arrived in the 55th minute. Chávez advanced into the penalty area and guided a controlled finish into the bottom corner, scoring his first World Cup goal and finally forcing Czechia to abandon the compact approach that had kept the match level.
Mexico struck again six minutes later. Jorge Sánchez surged forward down the right and Czechia failed to clear the danger, allowing Quiñones to react inside the area and convert from close range. His second goal of the tournament effectively ended Czechia’s qualification challenge.
The closing stages became a celebration of Mexico’s depth and history. Ochoa was introduced to a standing ovation for his 154th international appearance, while Aguirre continued rotating his players without surrendering control of the contest.
Fidalgo completed the scoring in the third minute of stoppage time. A move launched from the back eventually reached Roberto Alvarado, whose measured pass released the midfielder inside the area. Fidalgo kept his composure and placed the ball beyond Matěj Kovář to complete the rout.
Mexico finished Group A with nine points, six goals scored and none conceded. They joined Spain and Argentina among the sides that had not allowed a goal at this stage, while becoming the first Mexican team to win all three matches in a World Cup group.
Czechia finished bottom with one point after defeats by South Korea and Mexico and a draw with South Africa. Mexico will return to the Mexico City Stadium on June 30 to face one of the qualifying third-placed teams from Groups C, E, F, H or I in the round of 32.
