The JVP has rejected claims that General Secretary Tilvin Silva contacted Charith Abeysinghe, calling the allegation false and threatening legal action.
The JVP has strongly denied allegations that its General Secretary, Tilvin Silva, telephoned Charith Abeysinghe before his recent arrest, describing the claim as entirely false and accusing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) of attempting to mislead the public through fabricated statements.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) issued a media statement in response to remarks made at a media briefing held by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on Thursday (26), where party representative Varuna Rajapaksa made what the JVP described as a seriously false allegation.
According to the JVP, Varuna Rajapaksa claimed during the media briefing that approximately two months ago, the party’s General Secretary, Comrade Tilvin Silva, had telephoned Charith Abeysinghe, who was remanded on bribery charges on Wednesday (25), and invited him to meet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The JVP categorically rejected the allegation, stating that the claim is completely false and without any factual basis.
In its statement, the party said the allegation demonstrates how panicked and politically bankrupt the Samagi Jana Balawegaya has become in the face of a bribery-related incident that it claims is linked to underworld connections.
The JVP also expressed regret that a major political party such as the SJB had, in its view, reached a stage where it permitted an individual such as Varuna Rajapaksa to deliver what it described as a scripted statement during an official media briefing.
The party further asserted that while other political organisations may choose to recruit individuals without considering their backgrounds for various political objectives, the JVP has no need to recruit criminals into either the party or the government.
According to the statement, attempts to divert public attention away from alleged criminal incidents or to whitewash individuals facing criminal allegations by making false public statements will ultimately prove unsuccessful.
The JVP strongly condemned what it described as efforts by certain members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to damage the party’s reputation through false allegations.
The party also stressed that it would not hesitate to pursue legal action against those responsible for making what it described as defamatory and false statements.
The media statement was issued by the Media Unit of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.
