New Zealand beat England by 160 runs at Trent Bridge to win the series 2-1, with Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra leading the charge.
New Zealand beat England with a commanding 160-run victory in the third and deciding Test at Trent Bridge, sealing the series 2-1 and leaving the home side with painful questions after a bruising campaign.
Set 373 to win, England started the final day with hope, but very little room for error. New Zealand removed that hope early. Their attack struck quickly, claimed the key wickets, and then stayed calm when Jamie Smith tried to keep England alive. The hosts eventually fell for 212, giving New Zealand one of their finest overseas series wins.
New Zealand Beat England With First-Innings Control
New Zealand built the result through control across the match. Their first innings of 438 created the platform, driven by a huge opening stand between Devon Conway and Tom Latham. Conway made 157, while Latham scored 151. Together, they gave New Zealand the start that forced England to play catch-up from the first day.
England answered through Ben Stokes, who took 4 for 70, and then replied with 354. Ben Duckett led the response with a fluent 113. Jacob Bethell added 74, while Harry Brook made 58. However, New Zealand’s bowlers never allowed England to take charge. Nathan Smith claimed 4 for 91, while William O’Rourke and Zak Foulkes took three wickets each.
Mitchell And Ravindra Break England’s Resistance
New Zealand’s second innings then shaped the match. Daryl Mitchell produced the defining hand, making an unbeaten 100 from 241 balls. It was a display of patience, discipline and calm under pressure. Rachin Ravindra gave him excellent support with 94, and their partnership pushed New Zealand into a position of complete authority.
Jofra Archer lifted England with 4 for 53 in the second innings, but the target still moved far beyond comfort. New Zealand declared on 288 for 9, leaving England to chase 373 on a wearing surface against an attack full of belief.
England began the chase with intent, but they never found stability. Ben Stokes, opening in his final international innings, made 30 from 20 balls before falling to Foulkes. Ben Duckett added 36, while Harry Brook briefly threatened with 21 from only nine balls. But when the early momentum faded, New Zealand tightened their grip again.
Jamie Smith offered England’s strongest resistance. He fought for 60 from 91 balls and shared a useful stand with Gus Atkinson, who made 19. Still, the target always looked distant. Mitchell Santner eventually removed Smith to finish the match and spark New Zealand celebrations.
Stokes Era Ends As New Zealand Celebrate
For England, the defeat carried deeper meaning because it closed the Ben Stokes era. His final Test did not bring a fairytale finish. Instead, New Zealand gatecrashed the farewell and exposed the weaknesses still sitting inside England’s red-ball reset.
For New Zealand, this was a triumph built on discipline, patience and resilience. They had lost the opening Test at Lord’s, but answered with victory at The Oval. Then they delivered their strongest performance of the series at Trent Bridge. It was a statement win, not just because of the margin, but because they absorbed pressure and won the decisive moments.
England now face another period of reflection. Their batting remains inconsistent, their aggressive style will continue to face scrutiny, and the post-Stokes future begins under a cloud. New Zealand, meanwhile, leave England with a famous series win and fresh proof that their Test cricket remains strong, organised and ruthless when the moment demands it.
