Authorities believe the attacker targeted the victims as they returned home. The incident stunned the wealthy Mediterranean state. Monaco is better known for yachts, casinos, Formula One glamour and some of Europe’s costliest real estate than violent attacks.
Monaco’s prosecutor general has ruled out a terrorism classification at this stage. Instead, local reports said investigators are treating the case as attempted murder.

Investigators believe someone placed the explosive device near the building entrance shortly before the victims arrived. Reports said it detonated moments after they entered. That timing points to a planned and targeted attack, not a random explosion.
French and Monégasque police are now working together to trace the suspect. Officials believe he fled on foot toward Beausoleil soon after the blast. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a man placing a package or backpack near the building before leaving the scene.
Police had not arrested the suspect as of the latest updates. Forensic teams examined the blast site. Meanwhile, French authorities helped retrace the suspect’s movements across the nearby border.
Emergency teams moved the victims to hospitals in France after the explosion. Early reports said two adults faced life-threatening injuries. A younger victim suffered less serious injuries.
Later local reporting said the two adults had left immediate life-threatening condition. However, the woman’s prognosis remained critical.
Several reports identified the male victim as Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev. Some outlets also named him as Vadim Ermolaev. Reuters, citing French and Ukrainian media, reported that Yermolaiev appeared to be the intended target.
Businessman Reportedly Seen As Intended Target
Reports describe Yermolaiev as a former major real estate developer in Dnipro, Ukraine. Reuters reported that he left Ukraine several years ago.
It also said he renounced Ukrainian citizenship, became a citizen of Cyprus and faced Ukrainian sanctions in December 2023.
However, Monaco’s prosecutor said no legal proceedings are currently under way against the man considered the intended target. Investigators are still examining his background. They are also studying the circumstances that may have led to the attack.
The Monaco bomb attack has raised urgent questions over motive. Officials have not publicly explained why the victims may have been targeted. They have not said who ordered the attack, or whether the suspect acted alone.
Authorities have also not ruled out possible accomplices.
The device itself has become a central part of the inquiry. French media reports described it as a parcel bomb. Other accounts said it may have contained shrapnel, including bolts and buckshot. That material would have increased the danger to anyone nearby.
Monaco’s Minister of State Christophe Mirmand said the incident appeared targeted. He also described it as unprecedented for the principality.

Prince Albert II also issued a strong statement after the bombing. He expressed support for the victims, their families and residents affected by the blast.
He said Monaco’s public security officers acted quickly to secure the area and assist the injured.
The Prince said all relevant state services remained fully mobilised under government authority. He also said they were working closely with French authorities. He added that Monaco would remain united and resolute against violent crime.
