Chamira Perera claims a Gotabhaya Rajapaksa investigation could follow Karannagoda’s arrest and alleges billions of dollars were held in accounts.
The Gotabhaya Rajapaksa investigation could become the next major step following the arrest of former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda, according to Left Centre convener Chamira Perera.
Perera claimed that Karannagoda’s arrest marked a “Judgment Day” for those allegedly involved in massive corruption and fraud under the previous regime. He also claimed that former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa would be the next person in line.
He made the remarks while addressing a media briefing.
Commenting on Karannagoda’s arrest, Perera said the action should have taken place much earlier. He also alleged that the former Navy Commander acted as the main “contractor” who implemented political projects for the Rajapaksa family.
Perera then raised allegations concerning irregularities surrounding Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s recruitment to the Sri Lanka Navy.
“Karannagoda changed the rules and regulations to recruit the second son of the savage Rajapaksa family into the Navy. He deprived another talented young person of the opportunity that should have been theirs, and spent crores of public money to send him for training in England. These are serious crimes committed against the people of this country,” Perera said.
Perera strongly accused the Rajapaksa family and their associates of contributing to the country’s bankruptcy. He claimed that while people died in queues for fuel, gas and milk powder, rulers were filling bank accounts with billions of dollars.
“When there was no $200 million to import oil and people were dying on the streets, there were billions of dollars in their accounts. The current government has the responsibility to uproot the Deep State built by this savage regime,” he emphasized.
Criticizing statements made by certain lawyers in response to court orders and ongoing investigations, Perera said no corrupt individual should be allowed to escape the law.
His comments also linked the arrest of Karannagoda to his prediction of a future Gotabhaya Rajapaksa investigation, although he presented the claim as his political position during the media briefing.
“Those who used to eat with their teeth are now forced to eat with their mouths. What happened to Karannagoda will happen to Gotabhaya next. The day when everyone involved in this murderous, thieving regime goes to prison is not far away,” he further stated.
Perera also called on the public to remain united in completely defeating what he described as a corrupt network.
He said the current government must enforce the law fully and consistently, without protecting any individual from investigations or legal action.
