Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara says he takes responsibility for the Negombo Prison tragedy, expressing deep shock and sorrow over the deadly clash.
Speaking to the media, the Minister confirmed that authorities have now brought the situation inside the prison under control.
However, he stressed that nothing could justify the loss of human lives during the incident.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of human lives. I express my profound condolences to the families of the deceased,” the Minister said.
Nanayakkara assured the public that authorities would conduct a formal investigation into the Negombo Prison tragedy. He also promised necessary measures to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
The Minister said his main objective was not to place blame on any individual. Instead, he said the priority was to uncover the facts behind the incident and prevent such a tragedy from recurring.
