Batticaloa fisherman honesty earns praise after a lost wallet containing gold jewelry, money, bank cards and documents is returned.
A remarkable act of Batticaloa fisherman’s honesty has drawn attention after a fisherman returned a lost wallet containing about three pounds of gold jewelry, money and important documents to its rightful owner today.
A family woman from the Irudayapuram area of Batticaloa had travelled by motorcycle this morning to drop her child at a school in Batticaloa town. During the journey, her handbag, which she had placed at the front of the motorcycle, unexpectedly fell onto the road.
The wallet reportedly contained about three pounds of gold jewelry, a sum of money, bank cards, a driver’s license and several important documents.
The woman only realized that the wallet was missing after dropping her child at school and returning home. She then retraced the route she had travelled and searched the road for several hours.
Batticaloa Fisherman Honesty Saves Lost Valuables
Meanwhile, a fisherman who was fishing in the pond near the White Bridge in Batticaloa noticed the wallet falling from the moving motorcycle.
The fisherman said he repeatedly shouted in an attempt to stop the motorcycle. However, the rider continued without noticing him.
He then kept the wallet safely and waited for its owner to return. According to the account, he did not open the wallet while waiting, hoping that the person who had lost it would come searching.
Later, the woman returned while looking for the missing wallet. After confirming her identity and ensuring she was the rightful owner, the fisherman handed over the wallet and everything inside it.
The gold jewelry, money, bank cards, driver’s license and important documents were all recovered without damage or loss. Information about reporting lost or recovered property can also be obtained from Sri Lanka Police.
The woman’s family members expressed their gratitude to the fisherman for protecting the wallet and returning every item. The incident has highlighted a simple but powerful act of honesty in Batticaloa, where valuable property was safely returned to its rightful owner.
