Negombo prison viral story tells of a promising student allegedly jailed after unknowingly carrying drugs for a boyfriend she met online.
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – The Negombo prison viral story surrounding photos of a young woman on the prison roof has triggered widespread concern over misplaced online trust and its potentially devastating consequences.
Sri Lankan journalist Nalinda Dhanaranjan brought attention to the tragic account. According to details he shared, the inmate had once been a promising student captain and talented netball player from Badulla, with a bright future ahead.
Her life reportedly changed after she completed her Advanced Level examinations and stayed at her aunt’s home in Negombo. During that period, she placed complete trust in a boyfriend she had met through WhatsApp.
At his request, she agreed to carry a parcel. According to the account, she did not know that the package contained illegal narcotics. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted the delivery and arrested her on the spot.
The tragedy deepened while she remained behind bars. When national examination results were officially released, the young woman reportedly discovered that she had qualified for admission to the medical faculty.
A milestone that should have opened the door to a prestigious career instead became a painful reminder of a future shattered by one decision.
The Negombo prison viral story has since become a warning about the dangers of deceptive online relationships. Law enforcement authorities and social advocates warn that criminal networks increasingly exploit emotional bonds to use unsuspecting people as couriers.
Experts urge young people to think critically before carrying out tasks for online acquaintances. They also advise people never to transport or accept packages without knowing exactly what those packages contain.
However, an important caution remains. This report originated from a widely shared social media narrative circulating mainly on Facebook.
Independent investigative agencies and mainstream journalists have not yet independently verified the administrative records, located the specific prisoner, or confirmed the exact judicial facts surrounding the Negombo prison viral story.
These type of unfortunate students should be given a 2nd chance. The authorities should rethink and give her a chance to prove her innocence. It’s a devastating story, but how many more young kids like this have been trapped into being misled.
I think having considered the facts and if her story is found to be true, she is worthy of a Presidential Pardon. She should be housed in a seperate section of the prison with lesser offenders until her case is reconsidered.
The Boyfriend responsible should be given double the punishment and a seperate punishment for deception and breach of trust.
Hope this will reach the eyes of the Presidential Secretariat as this is a far more deserving case rather than the Drug Addicts they release for Wesak or Poson Poya or February 4th.
