Kylian Mbappé recovered from an early penalty miss to score and assist as France defeated Morocco 2-0, ending the Atlas Lions’ World Cup campaign and securing a place in the semifinals.
FOXBOROUGH, United States — Kylian Mbappé produced another decisive World Cup performance as France defeated Morocco 2-0 to advance to the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After being denied from the penalty spot during the first half, the French captain responded with a brilliant second-half goal before setting up Ousmane Dembélé for France’s second.
The victory at Boston Stadium ended another impressive tournament run by Morocco and sent France into a blockbuster semifinal against Spain.
Bounou Denies Mbappé From the Spot
France entered the quarterfinal as favourites but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Moroccan defence during a tense opening half.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was once again central to his team’s resistance.
France were awarded an opportunity to take control when Mbappé stepped forward from the penalty spot. However, Bounou remained composed and saved the French captain’s effort, keeping the match goalless.
The penalty miss briefly appeared to give Morocco renewed confidence. The Atlas Lions defended in numbers and attempted to frustrate a French side containing some of the tournament’s most dangerous attackers.
France controlled much of the possession but struggled to create a clear opening against Morocco’s compact defensive structure.
Bounou also made several additional interventions as France increased the pressure. His performance ensured Morocco remained level heading into halftime.
Mbappé Produces Moment of Brilliance
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute.
Mbappé received the ball in a crowded area and used the Moroccan defenders in front of him as a screen. He then produced a superb finish that left Bounou unable to respond.
The goal was Mbappé’s eighth of the tournament and his 20th in World Cup competition, further strengthening his reputation as one of the greatest performers in the competition’s history.
It also demonstrated the French captain’s ability to recover from disappointment.
Rather than allowing the missed penalty to affect his performance, Mbappé continued demanding the ball and searching for ways through the Moroccan defence.
Once France moved ahead, Morocco were forced to become more adventurous. That created additional space for France’s attackers to exploit.
Dembélé Seals France Victory
France doubled their advantage just six minutes after the opening goal.
Mbappé was again involved, creating the opportunity for Dembélé, who struck from outside the penalty area to make it 2-0.
The second goal effectively ended Morocco’s hopes of mounting a comeback.
France managed the remainder of the contest professionally, limiting Morocco’s attacking opportunities and protecting another clean sheet.
Although Morocco showed determination, they struggled to create the type of clear chances needed to threaten Mike Maignan’s goal.
The Atlas Lions’ best work came defensively, where Bounou and his teammates prevented the scoreline from becoming more damaging.
Morocco’s Journey Comes to an End
Morocco arrived in the quarterfinal hoping to repeat or surpass their historic achievement from the 2022 World Cup.
Four years earlier, Morocco became the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup semifinal before being eliminated by France.
The 2026 quarterfinal therefore carried added meaning. It offered Morocco the opportunity to avenge that defeat and continue another historic campaign.
However, France’s experience and attacking quality ultimately proved decisive.
Morocco had already shown enormous resilience during the tournament. They eliminated the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32 before defeating Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16.
Their journey again demonstrated that Morocco belong among international football’s strongest teams.
Despite the defeat, Bounou’s penalty save and commanding goalkeeping performance were among the match’s major highlights.
France Continue Their Title Charge
France have now reached another World Cup semifinal as they continue their pursuit of a third global title.
Didier Deschamps’ team have combined attacking brilliance with defensive discipline throughout the tournament.
Mbappé remains their biggest weapon.
His goal and assist against Morocco transformed a difficult quarterfinal and ensured that France remained in control once the breakthrough arrived.
Dembélé’s contribution also highlighted the variety of attacking threats available to the French coach.
France will now face Spain in the semifinals after the European champions defeated Belgium 2-1 in their quarterfinal.
The meeting will bring together two former world champions and two of the strongest remaining teams in the competition.
France will enter that contest with confidence after ending Morocco’s challenge without conceding and with Mbappé once again delivering when his country needed him most.
