Cardinal legal action is planned against MP Chamara Sampath over an allegation involving the Army Chief and a disputed July 2 meeting.
Cardinal legal action is being prepared against MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake over what Colombo Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith describes as a false statement.
The decision was announced through a statement issued by the Cardinal’s media spokesman, Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando. He warned that the MP’s remarks could create unrest among religious communities.
Dassanayake had alleged that the current Army Chief visited the Cardinal on July 2 with a basket of fruit. According to the MP, the visit sought the Cardinal’s support for an extension of the Army Chief’s service.
However, Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando rejected the allegation. He said the Cardinal was not in Sri Lanka on July 2.
Instead, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith was attending a special meeting at the Vatican, the spokesman said. The Cardinal legal action will therefore challenge the MP’s claim.
