A World Cup final replay petition has surpassed 100,000 signatures after Spain defeated Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory after extra time in New Jersey on July 19. Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, delivering Spain’s second World Cup title.
The result ended Argentina’s hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups.
However, thousands of frustrated Argentine supporters have refused to accept the outcome. They have backed an online Change.org petition calling on FIFA to order a replay.
Argentine fan Gisela Sanchez launched the petition. Reports said it had reached 101,613 verified signatures by Saturday after rapidly gaining attention online.
The petition alleges that several controversial decisions by Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić influenced the result. It calls for FIFA to investigate his performance and consider staging the match again.
However, the allegations remain unproven. An online petition has no power to overturn a FIFA match result, and the governing body has announced no plan to replay the final.
Reports also indicate that Argentine football officials rejected attempts to blame the referee for the defeat. Their response has weakened claims that the national association supports the campaign.
The World Cup final replay demand has nevertheless triggered intense discussion among supporters. Yet Spain remain the officially recognised 2026 champions, with Torres confirmed as the scorer of the title-winning goal.
