Catholic clergy and religious leaders joined members of the public in Jaffna to demand an independent international Chemmani mass grave investigation.
The Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese of Jaffna organized the peaceful demonstration. Protesters marched to Chemmani Junction, where organizers read an appeal addressed to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

Chemmani Mass Grave Investigation Demands Safeguards
Rev. Fr. Anthonipillai Augustine, chairman of the commission, led the clergy. They said authorities had recovered hundreds of human remains, including those of infants and children, from Sri Lanka’s largest known mass grave.
The appeal urged investigators to conduct all excavations, identifications and handling of remains under the Minnesota Protocol and other established international forensic standards.
The clergy demanded independent DNA analysis and participation by victims’ families. In addition, they called for protection for witnesses and human rights defenders, alongside monitoring by United Nations human rights mechanisms.
