The University of Peradeniya leopard warning has been renewed after reports of increased activity across the premises, with students and staff urged to remain alert and follow safety precautions.
The advisory follows an incident in the early hours of July 30, when a leopard killed a calf at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science farm.
Leopards living in and around the Hantana forest reserve occasionally enter the university grounds. Authorities have also recorded previous attacks on animals near the Veterinary Faculty cattle shed.
University of Peradeniya Leopard Warning Reinforced
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Terance Madhujith asked students, academics and non-academic staff to exercise extreme caution while moving around the campus. He particularly highlighted the early morning, evening and night hours.
The administration advised people not to walk alone. It also warned the university community against approaching wild animals or attempting to photograph them.
Anyone who sees a leopard or becomes aware of a related incident must immediately contact the University Security Division. The administration also urged everyone to follow all directions issued by security authorities.
Special caution is required near the Veterinary Faculty Teaching Farm, forested areas and locations where leopards have previously been sighted.
The University of Peradeniya leopard warning stresses that community safety and well-being remain a top priority. Therefore, the administration requested the full cooperation of students and staff in following the precautions and remaining vigilant at all times, especially near known wildlife movement areas across the university’s extensive grounds.
