22nd Constitutional Amendment will be taken to Parliament without delay once the court ruling arrives, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says.
The 22nd Constitutional Amendment will be taken forward in Parliament immediately after the court ruling is received, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said.
The President made the announcement while addressing a public rally in the Bulathsinhala area.
He said the amendment was essential to punish corrupt individuals and break what he described as the existing “black law” system.
According to the President, the court ruling on the 22nd Constitutional Amendment is expected within 21 days. He said the government would move to pass it without delay thereafter.
“We make these decisions very carefully on behalf of the people. Therefore, we will not reverse any decision we take,” the President said.
He claimed that those who had taken refuge in the existing corrupt system were now panicking.
“They are running around embassies, writing to international organizations. But we will not stop our journey,” he added.
President Dissanayake also said the scale of alleged crimes and corruption committed under previous governments was enormous.
He said even he was surprised as matters were revealed one after another.
“To be honest, given the extent of the wrongs that have been committed, when the law is properly enforced, there is a situation where not a single person would be left,” the President further stated.
