Fifteen people convicted over the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks have each been sentenced to 220 years in prison, with their assets confiscated.
COLOMBO – Fifteen people convicted in connection with Sri Lanka’s 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks have each been sentenced to 220 years of rigorous imprisonment, with the court also ordering the confiscation of their movable and immovable property.
The sentences were imposed by a three-judge bench of the Permanent High Court following its verdict finding the defendants guilty of multiple offences arising from the case.
Those convicted were:
Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Naufer, also known as Naufer Moulavi; Mohamed Sarifu Adam Lebbe, alias Abu Hathwik; Hayathu Mohamed Ahmed Milhan, alias Abu Silla; Mohamed Ibrahim Sadik Abdullah, alias Abu Omar; Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Haq, alias Abu Bala; Mohamed Anwar Mohamed Riskan, alias Abu Tariq; Mohamed Mansoor Mohamed Sanasdeen, alias Abu Mizan; Abdul Manaf Mohamed Fridows; Mohamed Rameesh Mohamed Sazik/Sajaz; Husainul Rizwi Mohamed Kahir Sameer; Mohamed Haneefa Zainul Abdeen, alias Abu Hina; Mohamed Mustapha Mohamed Haris, alias Abu Nanjian; Rasik Raza Hussain; Kachi Mohamed Jasmin; and Abdul Latef Mohamed Sathie, also identified as Sathie Moulavi or Abu Furqan.
Nine other defendants were acquitted and discharged.
One original defendant, Yaseen Bawa Abdul Raouf, died in custody during the proceedings.
The sentences mark a major stage in the criminal proceedings arising from the coordinated suicide bombings carried out on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019.
Churches and luxury hotels were targeted in the attacks, which killed hundreds of people and injured more than 500.
The court’s accompanying order provides for the confiscation of movable and immovable assets belonging to those convicted.
