Early-morning blaze disrupts traffic on the Kandy–Jaffna A9 highway for nearly an hour; police launch investigation into the cause.
KANDY, Sri Lanka – A fire that broke out at a vehicle parts business in the Kudugala area of Katugastota early Wednesday morning (4 November) was successfully brought under control following an emergency response involving firefighting teams from Kandy and Matale.
The blaze began at approximately 5:30 a.m., prompting the deployment of fire engines and the temporary suspension of traffic along a section of the Kandy–Jaffna A9 highway. No casualties have been reported.
According to Daily Mirror, the fire affected a vehicle spare-parts shop in Kudugala, while Hiru News identified the premises as a tyre sales outlet. The precise nature of the business and whether the affected building included warehouse facilities have yet to be independently established.
Firefighters From Two Districts Mobilised
The emergency prompted a response involving fire services from both Kandy and Matale.
Hiru News, as cited by LankaNewz, reported that the Fire Services Department immediately dispatched two fire engines after receiving notification of the incident.
Separate reports confirmed that firefighting units from Kandy and Matale participated in efforts to extinguish the blaze.
The deployment of personnel from two locations underlined the coordinated response to the emergency. However, authorities have not publicly explained whether additional resources were requested because of the fire’s severity, the availability of equipment or other operational considerations.
The precise methods used to extinguish the fire, the number of firefighters involved and the duration of firefighting operations have not been disclosed.
The blaze was subsequently brought under control, according to police accounts carried by local news outlets.
A9 Highway Closed for Nearly an Hour
The incident caused disruption along the A9 highway, a major transport route connecting Kandy with northern Sri Lanka.
The Officer-in-Charge of Katugastota Police confirmed that traffic through the Kudugala section of the highway was temporarily suspended for approximately one hour.
The closure allowed emergency personnel to respond to the fire while restricting vehicle movements near the affected premises.
Although the precise timing of the road reopening was not specified, reports confirmed that the interruption lasted close to an hour.
The extent of traffic congestion and any resulting disruption to commercial transport services have not been independently established.
No Casualties Reported
Despite the fire and the deployment of emergency services, authorities reported no loss of life.
There have also been no confirmed reports of injuries.
However, the extent of structural damage, the quantity of stock destroyed and the financial losses sustained by the business have not been disclosed.
It remains unclear whether adjoining commercial establishments suffered damage or whether firefighters took additional measures to prevent the blaze from spreading beyond the affected premises.
Cause of Fire Remains Unknown
Katugastota Police have initiated investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of reporting.
No official findings have been released identifying an electrical malfunction, accidental ignition, equipment failure or any other possible source of the blaze.
Consequently, any suggestion that the fire resulted from negligence, faulty wiring or deliberate action would be premature.
Investigators are expected to examine the available evidence to determine how the fire began, although authorities have not announced a timetable for completing their inquiries.
Questions Remain Over Damage and Emergency Response
Although the successful containment of the fire prevented any reported casualties, several important aspects of the incident remain unresolved.
Among them are the identity of the affected business, the estimated value of property losses and the extent of damage to the premises.
The reason firefighting units from both Kandy and Matale were deployed has also not been officially clarified.
Establishing these details would provide a clearer understanding of the scale of the emergency and the effectiveness of the response.
For now, the principal confirmed facts are that the blaze erupted at approximately 5:30 a.m., emergency crews from two districts responded, traffic along the A9 was temporarily suspended and the fire was brought under control without reported casualties.
Katugastota Police are continuing their investigation.
