The Online Safety (Amendment) Bill has been published in the government gazette. The bill has been a topic of controversy, with various groups expressing concerns about potential limitations on freedom of expression and other constitutional rights.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the publication of the revised bill and its presentation to Parliament on July 23. Although experts had raised concerns about specific sections of the bill, there was no opportunity to incorporate their proposed amendments during the committee stage.
To address these issues, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal on February 12, 2024, to draft amendments to the Security of Online Methods Act No. 9 of 2024. The proposal by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles to publish this draft bill in the government gazette and subsequently present it to Parliament was also approved.
