Sajith Premadasa, the presidential candidate of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has promised to implement a comprehensive program to uplift the poor and eradicate poverty within two years. Speaking at a public rally in Nikaweratiya today (30), Premadasa outlined his ambitious plans aimed at improving the lives of Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable citizens.
Premadasa announced a series of measures, including a 24% salary increase for public servants, raising the cost of living allowance from Rs 17,800 to Rs 25,000, and establishing a minimum salary of Rs 57,000. He also proposed reforming the current tax structure, reducing the tax rate from 6% – 36% to a more favorable 1% – 24%, which he believes will better protect the middle class.
Additionally, he promised substantial support for farmers, including offering a 50 kg fertilizer bundle for Rs 5,000, waiving crop loans, and providing chemical oil at affordable prices. These initiatives are part of a broader two-year poverty eradication program that draws on the positive aspects of previous welfare programs such as Janasaviya, Samurdhi, Aswesuma, and Gami Diriya.
Premadasa emphasized his commitment to rebuilding Kurunegala and other districts, urging the public to place their trust in him to lead the country out of its current challenges. “In times of sorrow, remember that Sajith is your only friend,” he declared, reaffirming his dedication to the people of Sri Lanka.
