Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe has clarified that Members of Parliament (MPs) are entitled to receive salaries, but pensions for MPs will be abolished as part of upcoming reforms. Speaking to the media today, he emphasized that the recent discussion around suspending benefits referred specifically to pensions, not salaries.
He also explained that MPs require accommodation in Colombo during parliamentary sessions, which is why the Madiwela housing complex is being renovated. According to Samarasinghe, this complex is being upgraded to ensure MPs have access to proper housing during their duties.
The Minister further revealed that the Pension Abolition Act will be introduced in the next parliamentary session, marking a significant step towards reducing the financial burden associated with pension payments to former MPs.
