Dr. T. Sathyamoorthy, the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Jaffna District Independent Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archuna, demanding compensation of Rs. 100 million. The case, filed in the Jaffna Courts, alleges that MP Archuna defamed both Dr. Sathyamoorthy and the hospital’s reputation through public statements and actions.
The lawsuit follows an incident on November 17, where Archuna reportedly entered the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, obstructed staff, and verbally abused Dr. Sathyamoorthy. The hospital director claims the MP’s behavior included threats and insults, which he believes have caused significant harm to his personal and professional reputation.
Dr. Sathyamoorthy also alleges that MP Archuna has made defamatory remarks about him and the hospital in various forums, including the Jaffna District Development Committee, on social media platforms, and in parliamentary discussions. These statements, according to the hospital director, have further tarnished the reputation of the hospital and its leadership.
Notably, this is not the only legal case involving the MP. Reports indicate that around 20 lawsuits have been filed against Archuna by various individuals across Sri Lanka, highlighting a pattern of legal challenges faced by the controversial politician.
This high-profile case has attracted significant attention, underscoring ongoing tensions between political figures and public institutions in the region.
