Authorities in Mullaithivu recently uncovered a stockpile of high-powered explosives weighing 14.7 kg, floating along the seashore at Thirthakatkara, located on the northern coast of Sri Lanka. The explosives were first spotted by local fishermen, who initially noticed a floating tin-like object in the water. Upon closer inspection, the fishermen contacted the Mullaithivu Police to report the unusual discovery.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the explosives stored securely in a collection of tins, which appeared to have been deliberately arranged to keep the items intact. The exact circumstances surrounding how the explosives ended up floating in the sea, as well as the identity of the individual or group responsible for storing them, remain unknown. Authorities have not yet released any details about who owned the explosives or how they came to be in the area.
The Mullaithivu Police have launched a full investigation into the incident. As part of the investigation, the authorities notified the Mullaithivu Court about the discovery and are working closely with the Police Special Task Force (STF) to safely neutralize the threat. The STF, specializing in handling explosives, has taken steps to defuse the stockpile of high-powered explosives to ensure public safety in the region.
This discovery adds to ongoing concerns over the illegal possession and transportation of explosives in certain regions of Sri Lanka, especially in areas recovering from years of civil unrest. The police continue to search for leads and are urging the public to report any suspicious activity related to explosives or other dangerous materials.
