Wasantha Handapangoda, the former Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Teachers’ Union, has passed away after a sudden illness. She was receiving treatment in England, where she had been visiting her daughter, and tragically passed away after two days of medical care.
Handapangoda was a dedicated teacher by profession and had made significant contributions to the education sector in Sri Lanka. She was well-known in the country, particularly after the violent incidents that occurred during the struggle at Galle Face on May 9, 2022, which brought her into the spotlight.
Her untimely passing has left a void in the community, and she will be remembered for her service to the education system and her leadership in the teachers’ union.
