The Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, highlighted the importance of strengthening the China-Sri Lanka partnership to advance Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector. Speaking during a meeting with Qi Zhenhong, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, on January 9 at the Ministry of Fisheries, the Minister emphasized the need for collaboration to address the challenges facing the industry.
The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in fisheries and marine resource management. Ambassador Qi expressed China’s commitment to promoting the sustainable development of Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector through technical assistance and knowledge sharing. He also reiterated China’s readiness to support Sri Lanka in achieving long-term growth and resilience in the industry.
Minister Chandrasekhar thanked China for its continued support and acknowledged the deep historical ties between the two nations. He underscored that mutual cooperation was essential for tackling issues such as resource depletion, climate change, and the need for technological upgrades in fishing practices. He further noted that the partnership would play a vital role in improving the livelihoods of fisherfolk and driving economic growth.
Both sides expressed their intention to enhance bilateral relations and explore innovative approaches for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector. The discussions centered on fostering closer ties in marine resource management, modernizing fishing technologies, and providing training to improve industry expertise.
The meeting was attended by Yanwei Zhu, Minister-Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission of the Chinese Embassy, and Dr. B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasayana, Private Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries. Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to deeper cooperation and mutual development in the fisheries sector.
