Victor Ivan was a prominent investigative journalist, political critic, theorist, and an author of several acclaimed books. Known for his fearless journalism, Ivan served as the editor of the controversial Sinhalese newspaper Ravaya for 25 consecutive years since its inception.
Ivan entered the field of journalism in 1986, during a time of political upheaval and violent youth insurrections in Sri Lanka. He launched The Ravaya as a monthly magazine, which quickly gained popularity among readers for its uncompromising focus on corruption and social injustice. Later, it evolved into a weekly tabloid, continuing its mission of exposing wrongdoings in the country.

Among his notable works are Chaurya Rajina, a critique of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s tenure, which was later translated into English as The Queen of Deceit. Another significant publication, Pansale Viplawaya, explored the Buddhist revival in Sri Lanka and was translated into English as Revolt in the Temple – The Buddhist Revival up to Gangodawila Soma Thera.
In his youth, Ivan was a Marxist rebel before dedicating his life to journalism and social activism. His fearless reporting and commitment to uncovering the truth left an indelible mark on Sri Lankan media and society.
Details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Ivan’s passing marks the end of an era in Sri Lankan journalism, and his legacy as a pioneer of investigative journalism and a voice for the voiceless will continue to inspire future generations.
