President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the government will not exert any influence over law enforcement agencies, including the police, when it comes to arresting individuals for fraud, corruption, or enforcing the law. Speaking at a gathering in the Pitipana area of Homagama, the President emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement officers to act independently and carry out their duties without political interference.
He revealed that some law enforcement officers had previously withheld certain cases, fearing political backlash. However, under his administration, these officers have been given the freedom to proceed with their duties without fear of reprisal.
“Some say they are granted bail, and that is the law. Bail is part of the judicial process, and investigations should focus on gathering irrefutable evidence and presenting strong cases in court,” the President explained. He added that remanding someone during an investigation is not a substitute for evidence, and the government’s objective is to ensure that cases are filed in the High Court to expedite justice.
The Attorney General’s Department recently announced the discovery of 11 major cases involving fraud and corruption. The President revealed that these cases could not be filed earlier due to fears of repercussions, but under the current administration, they are now ready to proceed. Some of these cases are expected to be filed as early as January.
He acknowledged the efforts of legal officers who had preserved case files until a more conducive environment for justice was established. “We have to be grateful to those who took these steps to ensure justice was not compromised,” he said.
The President reiterated that the government does not choose which cases to pursue or individuals to target. Instead, it has instructed relevant institutions to conduct proper investigations and act independently. “Our confidence lies in strengthening these institutions to ensure the rule of law,” he stated.
President Dissanayake also addressed criticism from opposition groups, saying they cannot accept the significant changes his government has brought about in a short period. He announced that the basic policy framework for the upcoming budget has already been prepared, signaling further reforms and progress.
The President concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to justice, institutional independence, and fostering trust in the country’s legal and administrative systems.
