Sarvajana Balaya leader MP Dilith Jayaweera has stated that a majority of those who voted to bring the Malaima government to power are now disappointed with its performance. Speaking at a party meeting in Polonnaruwa, Jayaweera emphasized that his movement aims to win back these disillusioned voters and bring them under his leadership.
The meeting, held on February 7, brought together Sarvajana Balaya Polonnaruwa district activists and party leaders, during which Jayaweera distributed appointment letters to newly appointed officers representing Divisional Secretariat Division 7 of the district.
Addressing party members, Jayaweera dismissed the perception that the current government’s dominance is permanent, urging his supporters to recognize the shifting political landscape. He noted that many former supporters of the Compass party—who were instrumental in its electoral success—have since distanced themselves from it due to dissatisfaction. According to Jayaweera, these individuals, who were once aligned with his movement, can be brought back under his leadership with the right political messaging and strategy.
Following the event, Jayaweera visited the sacred city of Anuradhapura on February 8, where he paid homage at the Ruwanweli Maha Seya and engaged in discussions with devotees. During his visit, he also met with Venerable Ethelawatunuwewe Gnanathilaka Thero, the Incumbent of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya Monastery, in what appeared to be a move to further strengthen his political presence among the religious community.
Jayaweera’s remarks reflect growing political shifts as opposition forces attempt to capitalize on public discontent with the current administration. His strategic outreach efforts and grassroots mobilization suggest an intensified push to consolidate power ahead of upcoming elections.
