SriLankan Airlines has announced plans to add three more Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft to its fleet by the end of 2025, as part of a broader strategy to increase capacity and enhance operational efficiency. This expansion is expected to boost the national carrier’s total capacity by 25-30%, strengthening its ability to meet growing passenger and cargo demand.
Speaking to Sunday Morning Business, SriLankan Airlines CEO Richard Nuttall revealed that the airline is pursuing an ambitious fleet expansion plan, with the goal of doubling its fleet size to approximately 50 aircraft over the next five years.
Currently, SriLankan Airlines operates a fleet of 22 aircraft, a reduction from the 27 aircraft it had before the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline had to downsize its fleet and restructure operations due to financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, but it is now focused on rebuilding and strengthening its network.
Nuttall also addressed industry-wide engine issues affecting narrow-body aircraft, explaining that SriLankan and many other airlines have faced significant technical challenges that have disrupted operations. To mitigate these risks, the airline is prioritizing the addition of more A330 wide-body aircraft, which are better suited for long-haul operations and provide greater operational flexibility.
With this expansion, SriLankan Airlines aims to improve passenger services, expand its global route network, and strengthen its position as a leading carrier in South Asia. The increased fleet size will allow the airline to explore new destinations, enhance flight frequencies, and optimize its long-haul operations.
This move aligns with SriLankan Airlines’ long-term vision for growth, ensuring greater reliability, efficiency, and competitiveness in the global aviation market. The airline is expected to provide further details on specific routes and operational improvements as the new aircraft are introduced into service.
