In a special event held today (February 12, 2025), the Ridiyagama Safari Park in Ambalantota officially named six three-month-old lion cubs, following a nationwide name submission campaign. The initiative, organized by the Zoological Gardens Department, received an overwhelming 4,000 name suggestions from the public.
The naming ceremony took place under the patronage of Chandana Rajapaksa, Director General of the Zoological Gardens Department, alongside wildlife officials, animal caretakers, and selected members of the public.
From the thousands of entries, the final six names were carefully chosen, with the only male cub being named Megha, while the five female cubs were named Tara, Agra, Bhumi, Akira, and Elsa.
The event also recognized three individuals whose submitted names were selected, with each of them being presented with a special certificate of appreciation for their contributions.
The Ridiyagama Safari Park, Sri Lanka’s largest open-air zoo, continues to play a vital role in wildlife conservation and captive breeding efforts. The successful birth and naming of these lion cubs mark another important milestone in the park’s commitment to protecting endangered species.
