The Attorney General’s Department Legal Officers Association has strongly defended the Attorney General and the officials involved in the recent decision to release three suspects, stating that their actions were based on independent professional judgment in line with the department’s long-standing traditions. The Association firmly declared that it would oppose any attempt to remove the Attorney General from office.
In a statement issued by Acting Secretary of the Attorney General’s Department, Tashya Gajanayake, the Association expressed deep concern over what it described as misleading and factually incorrect reports circulating in the media regarding the Attorney General’s instructions dated January 27, 2025.
The Association clarified that the established procedures and legal practices of the Attorney General’s Department were strictly followed in reaching the decision. The officers involved had carefully reviewed all relevant facts and legal provisions before recommending the release of the suspects. The Attorney General, after thorough evaluation, agreed with these recommendations and subsequently issued the necessary instructions.
Emphasizing the department’s independence, the statement underscored that prosecutorial decisions, whether to indict or release suspects are made solely based on factual and legal considerations, free from political influence or public sentiment. The Association reaffirmed its full confidence in the Attorney General and the officers involved, emphasizing that they acted with integrity and upheld the highest professional standards.
The Legal Officers’ Association concluded by stating that it would strongly resist any effort to remove the Attorney General from his position, warning that any such attempt would be firmly opposed to protect the independence of the department and uphold the rule of law.
