The FIFA red card reversal clears Folarin Balogun to face Belgium after Trump intervention, sparking World Cup backlash.
The FIFA red card reversal involving Folarin Balogun has ignited a storm after FIFA suspended his automatic one-match ban, clearing the United States striker to face Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16.
According to the Daily Mail report, the decision followed direct political intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump. The move has been described as unprecedented, controversial, and damaging by critics who say football’s disciplinary rules now appear open to political pressure.
FIFA Red Card Reversal Sparks Knockout Controversy
Balogun, the USMNT’s top scorer during their home World Cup campaign, received a straight red card in the 64th minute of the USA’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
Officials issued the card after a video review showed Balogun stepping on a Bosnian defender’s foot. Under standard FIFA disciplinary regulations, a straight red card normally brings an automatic one-game suspension. That ban would have ruled him out of the crucial knockout clash with Belgium in Seattle.
However, the case took a remarkable turn after President Trump intervened. Sources confirmed that Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to question the decision and urge world football’s governing body to review what he viewed as a harsh penalty.
After the call, Trump celebrated the outcome on social media, writing: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also publicly supported calls for the card to be rescinded.
FIFA Puts Balogun Ban On Probation
On the eve of the match, FIFA’s disciplinary committee announced that Balogun’s automatic suspension would be placed on hold for a one-year probationary period. The committee invoked Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
Under the ruling, Balogun remains eligible to play immediately. However, FIFA can enforce the suspension if he commits a similar infringement during the next 12 months.
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed the decision. He had described the original red card as “too big” a punishment for what he viewed as an unintentional foul. Teammates, including Christian Pulisic, also expressed relief.
Still, the FIFA red card reversal has sent shockwaves through the sport. Critics argue the ruling creates the impression of “one rule for the U.S. and another for everyone else.”
Belgium reacted furiously. The Royal Belgian Football Association released an official statement expressing astonishment, saying the decision stood in “direct contradiction” to standard regulatory procedures.
Belgian officials confirmed they are examining all possible legal and sporting options to defend fair play. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia mocked the ruling, saying FIFA had turned the World Cup into an “April Fool’s Day” joke.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also voiced frustration over the timing. He said the late announcement disrupted Belgium’s match preparations before a major knockout fixture.
