Erling Haaland’s late double sent Norway into the quarterfinals and Brazil out. The match ended 2-1 with Brazil converting a penalty in extra time, but it wasn’t meant to be for Neymar and the five time world champs.
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey: Norway vs Brazil delivered one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, as Norway defeated the five-time champions 2-1 in the Round of 16 and sent them out in dramatic fashion.
Erling Haaland became the decisive figure again. He scored twice late in the second half to turn a tense knockout tie into one of the most famous nights in Norwegian football history. Brazil had entered the match as favourites, but their only reply came through a stoppage-time Neymar penalty, which arrived too late to rescue their campaign.
The result sends Norway into the quarterfinals, where they will face England after the Three Lions survived a thriller against Mexico. For Brazil, however, the loss will raise serious questions about a tournament run that promised so much but ended with frustration, caution and heartbreak.
Norway vs Brazil Turns On Haaland Double
Brazil made one change for the match, with Gabriel Martinelli replacing the injured Lucas Paqueta. Carlo Ancelotti started Alisson in goal, with Danilo, Gabriel Magalhaes, Marquinhos and Douglas Santos across the back line.
Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes and Martinelli shaped the midfield, while Matheus Cunha, Rayan and Vinicius Jr led the attack. Norway, meanwhile, recalled Julian Ryerson from injury. Captain Martin Odegaard and Haaland also started in a side built around discipline, power and quick transitions.
The first half stayed tight and cautious. Brazil saw more of the ball, but they struggled to turn possession into real control. Norway stayed compact, patient and physically strong. They also refused to give Brazil’s forwards the space they needed to stretch the match.
Brazil did create chances, but Orjan Nyland gave Norway a superb platform. His biggest moment came when he saved Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty. That stop kept the match level and gave Norway the belief that a historic upset could happen.
Nyland Save Gives Norway Belief
As the match moved toward the final stages, Brazil became more anxious. Norway, by contrast, grew stronger and more dangerous. In the 79th minute, Haaland finally broke the deadlock with a powerful header that gave Alisson little chance.
Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser. However, that opened more space for Norway to attack. In the 89th minute, Haaland struck again. Andreas Schjelderup provided the assist, and Haaland finished clinically from the edge of the area to make it 2-0.
Neymar, introduced as Brazil chased the game, pulled one back from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time. Yet Norway held firm despite the late pressure. When the final whistle came, Brazil’s players collapsed in disbelief while Norway celebrated a famous victory.
For Norway, this was more than a win. It was a statement. They knocked out one of football’s greatest nations by combining defensive discipline, goalkeeping excellence and the ruthlessness of one of the world’s best strikers.
For Brazil, the defeat will go down as another painful World Cup exit. Their attacking talent remained clear, but their performance lacked urgency for long periods. Against a Norway side with belief, structure and Haaland, that proved costly on the night.
The Norway vs Brazil result now sends Norway on to the quarterfinals with momentum, confidence and a growing sense that this World Cup run could become something even bigger.
