The Government Nursing Officers Association has announced a one-hour nationwide protest today (27) in front of all hospitals, condemning the arbitrary cuts in allowances introduced in this year’s budget.
According to the association’s Vice President, Nalaka Hettiarachchi, the protest will take place from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm during lunchtime, ensuring that hospital operations remain unaffected. He emphasized that the reduction in allowances has placed an unfair financial burden on nursing officers, who are already working under challenging conditions.
Meanwhile, the Public Health Inspectors Association is also voicing its concerns, with its President, Upul Rohana, confirming that public health inspectors in the Eastern Province will engage in a symbolic strike by reporting sick leave. This action is in response to excessive working hours and the lack of solutions from the authorities despite repeated appeals.
Adding to the wave of protests, the Principals’ Grade Officers Association has also expressed dissatisfaction over the non-receipt of expected budget allowances for principals. The association’s Secretary, Nimal Mudunkotuwa, stated that in response, all principals will be summoned to Colombo in the near future as part of a larger protest demanding their rightful entitlements.
With multiple sectors voicing their grievances, today’s protests signal growing discontent among public sector employees over government policies and budget allocations.
