Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has revealed that the government has received intelligence reports indicating efforts to spread extremist ideologies among the Muslim population in the Eastern Province.
These findings, based on information gathered by the State Intelligence Service and the Military Intelligence Division, suggest that children, in particular, are being exposed to such teachings through certain religious activities. The Minister emphasized that these extremist ideologies contradict the true teachings of Islam.
“Most of these activities have been reported from the Kalmunai area, and security agencies have intensified their monitoring efforts. We will not allow extremism or racism to resurface in the country. Our goal is to eliminate these threats before they escalate,” Minister Wijepala stated.
Meanwhile, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake informed Parliament on Friday that six individuals were arrested following intelligence reports of potential attacks on tourists in Arugam Bay in October last year. He reassured that the government is handling such threats professionally and remains committed to ensuring national security.
