An internal police probe is now targeting its own officers after the controversial public arrest and roadside “trial” of a key murder suspect, raising serious questions about legal procedure and media sensationalism.
An internal investigation has been launched by the Police Special Investigation Unit into the conduct of officers involved in the arrest of the main suspect in the murder of the Weligama Regional Chairman. The probe focuses on the unusual circumstances surrounding the suspect’s apprehension in the Nawinna, Maharagama area.
Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wutler, confirmed the investigation, stating that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) is paying close attention to the incident. The core issue involves the suspect being publicly videotaped and questioned on the main road in front of media personnel immediately after his arrest. ASP Wutler emphasized that presenting evidence in this manner for a case already before the courts is highly prejudicial. He noted that such actions can negatively impact the judicial process and are also considered detrimental to both the victim and the accused.
The police spokesperson revealed that the investigation will determine whether the photos and videos were taken by an outside party or by police officers themselves. He also made a direct appeal to journalists, requesting them to be more attentive to sensitive details when reporting on crimes to avoid compromising legal proceedings and the rights of those involved. This case highlights the ongoing tension between media coverage, police procedure, and the integrity of the justice system.
