Former minister Wimal Weerawansa alleges a secret and dangerous deal with the United States, claiming Sri Lanka bargained away its sovereignty, including a potential naval base, for a favorable tax rate.
Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa has made explosive allegations against the government, claiming it has agreed to a series of perilous conditions with the United States in exchange for a reduced tariff rate. He contrasted America’s trade policies, stating it will impose a 50% tariff on India for not meeting conditions and a 19% tariff on Pakistan, which has complied by purchasing American oil and granting mining rights.
Weerawansa claims that for Sri Lanka to receive a similar 20% tariff, the government has agreed to a set of secret and dangerous agreements. He demands the government disclose these terms to the public. The former minister, speaking on an online channel, stated that based on his information, the conditions are severe.
He alleges the agreements include establishing a United States naval base in the strategic port of Trincomalee. Furthermore, he claims the deal grants immunity from Sri Lankan immigration laws for US personnel at this base. Weerawansa also asserts that the government has agreed to side with America in any international vote against US interests. An additional condition reportedly allows the US military to use Sri Lankan roads, ports, and airports during any state of emergency. These claims, while unverified by official sources, raise significant questions about national sovereignty and foreign policy.
