Quick action by pilots and emergency crews ensured the safe return of a Turkish Airlines aircraft to Colombo after a reported landing gear malfunction, averting a potential aviation emergency.
A Turkish Airlines passenger flight made a safe emergency landing at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake last night following a reported technical issue, airport authorities confirmed.
The Airbus A330, operating flight TK-733 bound for Istanbul, encountered a landing gear malfunction shortly after takeoff from BIA. The aircraft was carrying 202 passengers and 10 crew members at the time of the incident. Upon receiving the alert, airport officials immediately activated emergency procedures and prepared the runway for a possible emergency landing.
Fire trucks, ambulances, and airport emergency response teams were placed on full standby as a precaution. In line with standard aviation safety procedures, the pilot carried out a controlled fuel dump over the sea to reduce the aircraft’s weight and minimize risk during landing.
The aircraft subsequently returned and landed safely at Bandaranaike International Airport without incident. Airport officials confirmed that all passengers and crew members were unharmed.
Due to the emergency response measures, several outbound flights experienced temporary delays. The officer in charge of the airport stated that passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft and transported to nearby hotels. Arrangements have been made to move the aircraft for inspection and repairs before resuming operations.
