A misleading fitness controversy shakes Sri Lanka Cricket, as officials push back against false claims and players demand accountability for reputational damage.
Sri Lanka Cricket has firmly rejected a widely circulated report claiming that 19 national cricketers had failed their physical performance tests, calling the story inaccurate and baseless.
In an official statement, Sri Lanka Cricket clarified that the report, which was broadcast on a television channel on April 3, contained false information that had not been properly verified before publication.
The board emphasized that such unverified reporting has caused reputational harm not only to Sri Lanka Cricket as an institution, but also to its players and the integrity of the game itself.
Addressing the issue with clarity, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that several key players including Akila Dananjaya, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Udara, Mahish Theekshana and Prabath Jayasuriya had successfully completed and passed the physical performance tests conducted between February and April 2026 as part of the quarterly player fitness evaluation.
The board further noted that a group of players, including Mathisha Pathirana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Binura Fernando and Lahiru Kumara, had not yet undergone the required fitness assessments during the evaluation period.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka batsman Dinesh Chandimal responded to the situation by acknowledging the correction made by the media outlet, while also calling for a deeper investigation into how such misleading information was initially disseminated.
After publicly challenging the inaccurate claims, Chandimal welcomed the correction but stressed that accountability must follow, urging relevant authorities to identify those responsible for spreading false and damaging narratives targeting national players.
He reiterated his personal commitment to maintaining peak fitness levels throughout his career, emphasizing that representing Sri Lanka comes with responsibility and discipline.
Chandimal further stated that regardless of how long he continues to play for the national side, he remains fully dedicated to upholding professional standards and prioritizing the team above all else.
Expressing heartfelt appreciation, Chandimal also thanked the fans for their unwavering support, highlighting that wearing the Sri Lanka jersey is not merely a profession but a symbol of pride and national duty.
He concluded by reaffirming that the players are driven by the trust and expectations of the supporters, promising that they will continue to give their absolute best every time they step onto the field.
