Coal unloading delay near Norochcholai is costing Rs.50 million daily in demurrage, D.V. Chanaka says, warning of cargo risk.
Coal unloading delays near Norochcholai are forcing the government to pay around Rs. 50 million daily in demurrage charges, SLPP MP D.V. Chanaka has claimed.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Member of Parliament D.V. Chanaka revealed that two coal carrier ships anchored in the sea near Norochcholai have still not completed unloading due to delays.
He said the delay has created an additional financial burden on the government, with demurrage charges amounting to approximately Rs. 50 million per day.
The MP also warned that the delay could place a coal consignment worth Rs. 270 million at risk of falling into the sea.
Chanaka made these remarks while lodging a complaint before the Special Presidential Commission appointed to investigate alleged corruption and irregularities connected to coal imports.
He submitted information to the Commission regarding several alleged frauds, including what he described as a Rs. 100,000 million loss linked to coal imports.
The MP also handed over relevant documents in support of his complaint.
Meanwhile, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya is also expected to submit its own file on alleged coal import frauds to the Commission this week.
SJB Member of Parliament Mujibur Rahuman said the relevant documents are currently being prepared.
The President appointed the Commission to investigate corruption and irregularities in coal imports from 2009 up to the present.
The public and political parties have been given an opportunity to submit information related to these transactions.
The deadline for submitting information to the Commission ends on May 22.
