Sri Lanka inflation rose from 2.4% to 4.7% in April as NCPI data showed sharp pressure from non-food and transport-related costs.
Sri Lanka inflation has nearly doubled within one month, rising sharply from 2.4% in March to 4.7% in April, official data shows.
The Department of Census and Statistics announced the increase while releasing its latest monthly report based on the National Consumer Price Index.
According to the department, the National Consumer Price Index, which stood at 210.9 in March 2026, increased to 216.3 by April.
The report shows that the food category contributed 0.46% to the monthly change, while the non-food category contributed a much higher 2.08%.
Core inflation, which excludes frequently changing food, energy, and transport costs, also increased from 198.6 in March to 202.2 in April.
Accordingly, the overall increase in the country’s general price level has been recorded at 116.3%.
The food category, which carries a 39.22% weight in the National Consumer Price Index, recorded point-to-point inflation of 1.1% in April.
Its monthly change was recorded at 1.8%.
However, the sharp rise in the non-food category, which has the highest weight of 60.78% in the index, has been the main driver behind the overall inflation increase.
Point-to-point inflation in the non-food category rose to 7.8%, while its monthly change stood at 2.6%.
The latest figures indicate growing pressure on household budgets as Sri Lanka faces a renewed rise in the cost of living.
