Tilvin Silva says several North military camps have been removed, more land will be released, and further camp reductions are planned.
North military camps will be further reduced as the government moves to release more land to the people, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said.
The General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna stated that during the past 18 months, steps had been taken to remove several military camps established in the Northern Province.
He said those steps had also freed up a large extent of land belonging to the people.
Tilvin Silva further revealed that additional land which can be released in the future has already been identified.
He said discussions are currently underway regarding the relocation and reduction of the size of existing military camps.
According to him, the purpose of those discussions is to release more lands to the people.
However, he emphasized that those lands cannot be taken over arbitrarily.
He said the process is expected to be carried out through a formal restructuring of military camps.
Tilvin Silva also said his government has earned the trust of the people in the North.
He added that the government is therefore committed to fulfilling the promises it made to them.
Speaking on elections, he said holding an election this year would be difficult due to factors such as the allocation of Rs.500 billion, or 50,000 crore.
However, he said he believes elections will be held next year if no other issues arise.
Tilvin Silva further stated that due to the very close and friendly relationship between the Sri Lankan government and the Indian government, there will be no pressure from India on this matter.
